The Loop at Speed

If you cannot say it under time, you do not have it yet.

Loop stage

Act

You do the thing, holding the outcome loosely.

kathēkon — the fitting action

Virtue

Wisdom

What is actually true here, and what is up to me?

sophia / phronēsis

01

The idea

The loop taught across this path — pressure, pause, perceive, judge, choose, act, return — must become oral and short. Under load, you will not reconstruct Hadot. You will run seven moves or you will run your old reflex.

One sentence each is enough: Something landed. I open a gap. What is fact vs story. Does this earn assent. What virtue/role. Act with reserve. Review without prosecution.

Speed comes from dry runs, not from wishing. Blanking is diagnostic: the blanked stage is the underbuilt module.

02

Why this matters

Capstone without retrieval is a certificate of having scrolled.

Oral brevity is what survives adrenaline.

Linking blanks to earlier modules keeps earlier modules in play as one system, not a stack of readings.

Read at your level

How to run it, and where it breaks.

03

Practice

Run once calm, once under mild stress (before a hard meeting, after a rude message).

Keep a card only during week one; then deny yourself the card.

When you blank, note the stage and reopen that module's drill within forty-eight hours.

04

Primary text

Quoted from translations whose copyright has expired, and glossed rather than left to speak for itself. The translator is named because the wording is theirs, and some of the modern misreadings begin in a translator's choice.

  • Enchiridion 1

Some things are in our control and others not. Things in our control are opinion, pursuit, desire, aversion, and, in a word, whatever are our own actions.

Carter's opening (same as Module 01). Under storm conditions this is the perceive/judge hinge compressed — recover it as a sentence, not as a lecture.

Practice · Field manual

Write your seven storm sentences — short enough to speak while angry.

Loop card (personal wording)

Stays in this browser · never sent anywhere · clear it any time

One line.

Include a physical cue if you can.

Force the split.

Yes / no / wait are all legal.

One word often enough.

Reserve clause in plain English.

When, specifically?

07

Run it

Complete five timed dry runs.

Retire the written card after you succeed twice without it.

Schedule the module that matches your most common blank.

Fill the seven fields today and run one timed pass tonight.

Sit with this

  • Which stage is still scholarly rather than oral?
  • Where do you still invent philosophy mid-crisis?
  • What mild stressor makes the best training arena this week?

Where you stand

UntouchedFinished is not mastered. Mastered is not merely opened. Review timing stays on this device for now.
  • Practice: finish the lesson practice above first
  • Review cadence (days): 1 · 3 · 7 · 14 · 30 · 60 — saved on this device after mastery

The Mastered checkbox below stays closed until you complete the practice on this page interaction. Scrolling is not evidence.

This is philosophy education. It is not therapy, counselling, or medical advice, and it does not diagnose or treat anything — the historical link between Stoicism and cognitive therapy is a fact about intellectual history, not a licence. It is also not emergency or disaster preparedness. The pressure it trains for is ordinary and recurring: the hostile email, the diagnosis, the argument at eleven at night. If you are struggling with your mental health, a qualified professional in your own country is the right call, and philosophy can sit alongside that rather than in place of it.
