Your Shear Points

Generic virtue fails at your personal fault line.

Loop stage

Choose

You ask which virtue this moment is asking for, and commit.

01

The idea

Everyone has shear points: conditions under which a particular stage collapses first. Humiliation skips pause. Fatigue skips perceive. Fear skips choose and jumps to avoidance dressed as prudence. Status threat skips justice.

A personal storm sheet lists three repeated failures, the stage each destroys, and a catch that must fire before the old reflex — a delay rule, a second reader, a walk around the block, a forbidden channel (no email while furious).

Courage here is willingness to name the unflattering pattern without turning it into fatal identity.

02

Why this matters

Unpersonalised protocol is library knowledge. Storms are personal.

Catches beat intentions. Intention is what you had before the trigger.

Patterns also tell you which earlier modules to revisit instead of collecting new quotes.

Read at your level

How to run it, and where it breaks.

03

Practice

Verify patterns with recent evidence, not self-mythology.

Install catches that are behavioural and externalised where possible (rules, delays, people).

Review catches monthly; retire ones you never need and strengthen ones you bypass.

04

Primary text

Quoted from translations whose copyright has expired, and glossed rather than left to speak for itself. The translator is named because the wording is theirs, and some of the modern misreadings begin in a translator's choice.

  • Discourses I.1

You are not flesh nor hair, but you are the faculty which chooses: if you show this to be beautiful, then you will be beautiful.

Long's rendering, already used above. Under storm conditions the point is narrow: protect the faculty of choice with pre-installed catches when beauty of character is hardest.

07

Run it

Install all three catches this week.

After the next trigger, note whether the catch fired — binary.

Reopen the module that matches your weakest stage.

Write the shear-point sheet once in ink. Digital-only versions get optimised instead of used.

08

Sit with this

  • Which condition shears you most — fatigue, fear, humiliation, status?
  • Which catch will be hardest to obey — and why?
  • What story stops you from installing external constraints?

Where you stand

UntouchedFinished is not mastered. Mastered is not merely opened. Review timing stays on this device for now.
  • Practice: finish the lesson practice above first

The Mastered checkbox below stays closed until you complete the practice on this page interaction. Scrolling is not evidence.

This is philosophy education. It is not therapy, counselling, or medical advice, and it does not diagnose or treat anything — the historical link between Stoicism and cognitive therapy is a fact about intellectual history, not a licence. It is also not emergency or disaster preparedness. The pressure it trains for is ordinary and recurring: the hostile email, the diagnosis, the argument at eleven at night. If you are struggling with your mental health, a qualified professional in your own country is the right call, and philosophy can sit alongside that rather than in place of it.
