Module 14 / 14 · Act
The Storm Protocol
Pressure → pause → perceive → judge → choose → act → return. From memory. Under two minutes. Then live the outcome.
The brief
What's inside
What's at stake
How to run the seven-stage loop end to end from memory; how to write a personal storm sheet for your repeated failure modes; and where this training ends — including the point at which a professional, not a protocol, is the fitting action.
Why it matters
Insight that cannot be retrieved under humiliation, fear, or fatigue was entertainment. What follows is the retrieval test.
The tradition
No Stoic published a document called a storm protocol. The stages are recovered from the school's sequence of impression, suspension, assent, choice, action, and renewed attention — arranged here as a teaching device and labelled editorial in the ledger.
You leave with
- How to run pressure → return from memory in under two minutes
- How to write your own protocol for the three failures you personally repeat
- How to spot which stage you lose first when tired, frightened, or humiliated
- Where philosophy stops and professional help, emergency services, or ordinary human support begins
How it connects
You have the published programme. Return to any earlier module when a stage keeps failing — depth beats novelty.
The lessons
3 lessons, each one a rep
Every lesson reads at three depths and ends in something you do today. Where a lesson carries a practice, it makes you commit before it shows you the reasoning — because recognising the right answer beside the question is not the skill this trains.
The drill
Two-minute dry run
Twice a day for five days, once calm and once when mildly stressed. Speak the loop aloud. Speed without skipping.
- 01Start a two-minute timer.
- 02Say the seven stages in order with one plain sentence each, applied to a real mild irritation from the last day.
- 03End on a concrete next act or a deliberate non-act.
- 04If you blank, restart from Pressure — blanking is data about which stage is underbuilt.
How you know it worked
You can finish twice under time without reading. Blank points name your homework modules.
The check
3 questions, no score
Every option carries its reasoning, including the right one. Nothing is marked and nothing is recorded — commit to an answer, then read the argument for and against all four.

Question 01
What is the storm protocol, historically?
Question 02
You notice that whenever you are humiliated, you skip pause and go straight to counter-attack. What should your personal storm sheet emphasise?
Question 03
When is the right move NOT to run this protocol?
Take this with you
Take this with you
Under load you will not invent a philosophy. You will run what you installed. Install a short order you can remember when intelligent sentences flee: name the pressure, open a pause, separate fact from story, withhold unearned assent, ask the virtue/role question, act with a reserve clause, return without prosecution. Know your personal shear points. Know the exits that are not weakness.
This is philosophy education. It is not therapy, counselling, or medical advice, and it does not diagnose or treat anything — the historical link between Stoicism and cognitive therapy is a fact about intellectual history, not a licence. It is also not emergency or disaster preparedness. The pressure it trains for is ordinary and recurring: the hostile email, the diagnosis, the argument at eleven at night. If you are struggling with your mental health, a qualified professional in your own country is the right call, and philosophy can sit alongside that rather than in place of it.
