Peptides and proteins are built from the same parts by the same bond. A chain of amino acids joined by peptide bonds is a peptide; once it is long enough to fold into a stable three-dimensional structure of its own, convention starts calling it a protein. The boundary is usually placed around fifty residues and it is a naming habit, not a property of nature.
What the length does change is behaviour. Short chains are more flexible, easier to synthesise, cleared faster, and far more likely to be broken up by the enzymes that digest protein — which is why so much of the therapeutic literature is about stabilising them.
The reviews describe a class that sits deliberately between small-molecule drugs and biologics: more specific than the former, smaller and simpler to make than the latter, and inheriting problems from both sides.
