Pulling the Circles In

The exercise is inbound, not a wall.

01

The idea

Hierocles described concern as concentric circles — self, family, community, humanity — and the practice as drawing the outer circles inward so that the stranger is treated a little more like the neighbour. The image survives in fragments and later quotation; there is no pretence here of placing a public-domain Hierocles text in your hands.

Two failures are common. The individualist failure builds the innermost wall taller. The abstract-humanitarian failure leaps to "humanity" while neglecting the near claim that is actually on today's calendar. Both miss the exercise.

Cost is real. Pulling a circle in means time, attention, money, or risk moves outward. If your circles practice never costs, it is a mood.

02

Why this matters

Justice stays rhetorical until someone specific becomes nearer than they were.

Near duties without outer draw becomes clan ethics. Outer talk without near duties becomes branding.

The exercise also diagnoses the revival: self-mastery content rarely asks you to move a stranger one ring closer.

How to run it, and where it breaks.

03

Practice

Pick one person or group one ring out. Name one concrete act that moves them nearer this month.

Keep a near-claim protected in the same month so the expansion is not abandonment.

Prefer repeated small inward draws over one spectacular gesture that returns you to the wall.

Notice media diets that thicken fear of outer rings; information shape is part of the practice.

Primary text

Quoted from translations whose copyright has expired, and glossed rather than left to speak for itself. The translator is named because the wording is theirs, and some of the modern misreadings begin in a translator's choice.

  • Meditations IX.5

Thou dost wrong not only when thou doest wrong, but also when thou dost not do something.

Long's rendering. Omission toward outer rings is still on the ledger — a pressure Hierocles' image makes practical.

Practice · Field manual

Design one inbound draw for this month. Make the cost visible.

Circles — one ring inward

Stays in this browser · never sent anywhere · clear it any time

Expansion that trashes the centre is not the exercise.

Specific beats "humanity".

Must be observable by someone else.

If you cannot name a cost, keep editing until you can.

07

Run it

Execute the field-manual move within thirty days.

Decline one abstract "care about everything" demand that would erase a near claim.

Tell one person the individualist Stoicism line and correct it without sneering.

Put the inward move on a dated calendar entry with the cost noted in the description.

08

Sit with this

  • Where is your wall thickest — and who taught you to thicken it?
  • Where do you perform outer concern while starving a near duty?
  • What would one ring inward look like if it had to cost?

Take this with you

Justice and Other People

You are not the only person in the room. Stoic ethics treats that as a structural fact about what you are for, not as a soft add-on after you have sorted your inbox. Roles turn the fact into today's task; the circles turn strangers into nearer claims. Leave either out and you have kept composure and discarded the product.

The drill

One role, one debt

Fifteen minutes. Translate a foggy sense of "I should be better" into one named role and one action that fits it before Friday.

  1. 01Name one role you actually occupy this week — not aspirational: parent, sibling, colleague, neighbour, manager, citizen, friend.
  2. 02Write the other party's claim in one sentence without editing for fairness theater.
  3. 03Name the fitting action available in under an hour that honors that claim without requiring them to change first.
  4. 04Schedule it. If you cannot schedule it, the action was still aspirational.

This is philosophy education. It is not therapy, counselling, or medical advice, and it does not diagnose or treat anything — the historical link between Stoicism and cognitive therapy is a fact about intellectual history, not a licence. It is also not emergency or disaster preparedness. The pressure it trains for is ordinary and recurring: the hostile email, the diagnosis, the argument at eleven at night. If you are struggling with your mental health, a qualified professional in your own country is the right call, and philosophy can sit alongside that rather than in place of it.
