Two systematic reviews with meta-regression have now looked at proximity to failure directly, and both land in the same place: once a set is taken close to failure, going all the way to it adds little or nothing to hypertrophy. Strength gains, if anything, favour stopping short — the extra fatigue costs more in later sets and later sessions than the final rep returns.
The practical reading is that failure is a tool rather than a requirement. It is most defensible on isolation work and machines, where the fatigue is contained, and least defensible on heavy compound lifts, where technique degrades and the recovery bill is largest.
What the same literature does insist on is that sets be taken reasonably close to failure. The finding is that the last rep is optional, not that effort is.
