Non Negotiable Standards

Decide once. Obey often.

01

Core concept

A non-negotiable is a rule you do not reopen when you are tired. It is short, specific, and defended. Ambiguous standards collapse under stress because stress invents loopholes.

This is the discipline mechanic of pre-deciding. You decide once in a clear mind so you can obey often in a noisy mind. "Maybe later" is how grey zones eat years.

Non-negotiables are few on purpose. If everything is sacred, nothing is. Choose the lines that protect identity and performance, then delete debate.

02

Why this matters

Most people fail in the grey zone: just this once, special case, I'll restart Monday. Non-negotiables delete the grey zone for the few things that matter most.

Pre-deciding frees cognition for craft. You stop spending executive attention on questions that should already be closed.

Trust — with yourself and others — is built on predictable floors. Non-negotiables are how predictability becomes visible.

03

Performance

Implementation intentions are the scientific backbone of non-negotiables: when cue X occurs, response Y is mandatory. The plan is the rule.

Habit formation research supports stable contexts: same time, same place, same preceding action. Non-negotiables fail when the cue is optional.

Limit active non-negotiables to one to three while installing. Capacity is finite; theatre lists are infinite.

Pair each rule with a friction cut (layout, blocking, bag packed) and a replacement behaviour so the urge has somewhere to go.

Review monthly: keep, tighten, or retire. Non-negotiables should evolve with your season — frozen forever is dogma, not discipline.

04

Real world

Admiral McRaven's "make your bed" is not about laundry. It is about starting the day with a completed standard — a small non-negotiable that teaches the mind you keep score.

Founders who protect a daily shipping or customer block on the calendar are running the same code: the block is not renegotiated against inbox weather.

05

Practical application

Write one non-negotiable for the next seven days. Make it binary and environmentally supported.

Define the shrink version in advance (e.g., ten push-ups if the full session is impossible). Shrink is not zero.

Put the rule on paper beside your ignition cue. Verbal memory is where renegotiation lives.

Write one non-negotiable for the next seven days. Example: "Phone stays out of the bedroom." Defend it tonight.

06

Reflection

  • Which grey-zone phrase do you use most — "just this once," "later," or "Monday"?
  • What single rule would remove the most daily debate if you actually defended it?
  • What is your pre-written shrink version when conditions degrade?
