01
Core concept
Deep work is unbroken concentration on cognitively hard, valuable work. It is scheduled craft time — not a mood you wait for, and not a marathon you brag about after one heroic night.
Flow can appear when challenge and skill meet inside clear goals and immediate feedback. You do not summon flow; you build the conditions: protected time, one target, difficulty slightly above comfort.
Shallow work feels productive because it is visible and interruptible. Deep work moves careers, products, and skills because it compounds scarce cognitive effort into artefacts others cannot fake.
02
Why this matters
Without depth, you become a high-speed traffic controller of other people’s priorities. With depth, you produce work that raises your ceiling.
Consistency beats occasional heroics. Short, repeated deep blocks train the initiation habit; rare twelve-hour sessions often train burnout and avoidance.
